Popular Repairs
Battery Replacement
Estimated cost: $25
- Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance
- Genesis, GameGear
- Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64
- CMOS Battery (ex. Gamecube, Dreamcast, PS3, etc.)
Many games in the cartridge era used batteries to hold important data such as save files and real time clock data. Over time, these batteries dry out and those functions no longer work in the game. To properly replace the battery, they must be de-soldered and a new one soldered onto the board. Along with replacing the battery, this service also includes a complimentary cleaning of the board and pins to ensure the game keeps working the best that it can.
Port Replacement
Estimated cost: $150
- PS4/PS5 HDMI
- Nintendo Switch USB C
One of the most common failure points on a game console are the ports. These include hdmi on home consoles, and charging ports on handhelds. This typically requires fully disassembling the system, removing the port from the board, and carefully soldering in a new one. This service can optionally include cleaning and replacement of thermal paste.
Cartridge Reader Fix
Estimated cost: $30
- Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64
- Genesis
Easily the most common problem with NES consoles is the cartridge reader becoming dirty and/or worn out. This can cause the infamous blinking red light when games can not be read by the system. To a lesser extent, this can be a problem with other cartridge reading systems as well, but how easy it is to fix or replace them varies by console.
Other Services
General Diagnostics
Estimated cost: $30/h
Something not working in your game or console? Maybe we can help! This service depends heavily on the specific device/game/problem, but if you outline what issue you’re having, we can take it apart and do some testing to try and find the source of the problem.
Console Cleaning
Estimated cost: Starting at $25
Is your console over heating from dust build up? Or maybe you just want to keep it clean to prevent issues in the future. Either way, we’ll give it a full cleaning. Console cleaning starts at $25 but goes up depending on the console and how extensive the cleaning required.
Controller Repair
Estimated cost: Starting at $20 + parts
- PS5 joystick drift
- NES button membrane failure
- Controller cleaning
Joystick drift is a common problem with almost all controllers from the main console manufacturers, due to the use of potentiometers to calculate stick movement. These wear out over time, and can cause the controller to think there is movement when there isn’t. These sticks can be replaced in most controllers, however recalibrating them can be easy or hard depending on the controller. Other parts of a controller might also need replacing, fixing, or cleaning, so feel free to mention what controller problems you are having, in case we can help!
Console Recap
Estimated cost: Starting at $30 + parts
- Original Xbox Clock Capacitors
- Super Nintendo Power and Video Capacitors
- Game Gear Main, Power, and Audio board Capacitors
A common failure point in game consoles manufactured even up through the early 2000s has always been, and will continue to be, the capacitors. Some consoles, such as the original Xbox and the Sega Game Gear, are notorious for having been manufactured with incorrect or faulty capacitors which will inevitably break down over time and cause the console to stop working. This only gets worse over time, as more and more of them stop working, and with electrolytic capacitors specifically, the longer they go before being replaced, the more likely they are to damage other components on the board. Luckily, capacitors of all varieties are typically of a common size and specification, which means replacement parts are not too difficult to come by, making this a consistent and viable repair.
Mods
Gameboy and other handhelds
Estimated cost: Variable
- IPS Screen replacement
- Battery upgrades
- Shell replacement
There are a myriad of great mods that can be done to the entire line of Gameboy handhelds to breath new live into these beloved devices, such as replacing the original screen with something modern, giving it a new shell with a nice design, or even upgrading to a modern battery. These all vary in cost depending on what parts are available, so feel free to ask about a specific mod or handheld you want worked on and I will look into what’s available!
LED Lighting
Estimated cost: Variable
- Power light replacement
Want to give your retro consoles a little unique flair? Replace the old red power light with a modern led of any number of different colours! This service varies depending on what console and how extensive the lighting change, so feel free to reach out and we’ll see what we can do!
Please Note:
We do not service devices that have bugs in them, dead or alive. If we suspect that there are bugs (ex. Cockroaches, spiders, bedbugs) in the machine, we will reject it. If we find bugs in them during servicing, the machine will be sealed in a container and returned immediately.
Additionally, if we find that the console needs to be cleaned during disassembly for one of the services, there will be a cleaning fee that will depend on how much cleaning has to be done to access the necessary components.
